On December 4 and 14, 2013, Home Base Housing welcomed visitors to tour the “in progress” work of renovating the building at 540 Montreal St. Slated to open in March of this year, 540 Montreal Street will become the co-location of several Home Base Housing programs with the addition of the new home of Independent Living Centre Kingston and seven (7) affordable housing units – including a fully accessible, one-bedroom apartment.
540 Montreal Street will be the new location of In From the Cold emergency shelter with its 24 beds and 5 private rooms to accommodate individuals that may have special needs that require privacy. The Housing Help Centre is also part of the move and will continue to assist individuals and families seeking housing outreach or eviction prevention services. The centre will also continue to provide Community Voice Mail service for those who are without a phone of their own but want to stay in touch with family, friends, or potential employers or landlords. The Supportive Housing and Youth Services programs will also have offices in the building as well as our Administrative offices. With everything under one roof, Home Base Housing improves its continuum of services to those seeking assistance in securing temporary, transitional or permanent housing or in maintaining the housing they have.
The Open House on December 4 marked the launch of our Capital Campaign for 540 Montreal Street. In just a month’s time, Home Base Housing has raised more than half of its $150,000 goal with the generous support of individuals, businesses, faith groups and foundations. If you’d like to donate, please visit our home page that will link you to the CanadaHelps page where you can make a secure on-line donation. For those who prefer more traditional methods of donating can send a cheque to: Home Base Housing, 417 Bagot St. Kingston, ON K7K 3C1.
