In From the Cold Emergency Shelter

Established in the winter of 2000, In From The Cold (IFTC) Emergency Shelter was opened as a temporary winter overflow shelter to assist other shelters.  Due to demand for shelter beds, In From The Cold has operated on a year-round basis since July 2004. The shelter works closely with other Kingston shelters: Elizabeth Fry Shelter for Women, Kingston Youth Shelter and Ryandale Shelter for the Homeless (overflow shelter).

Currently located at 540 Montreal Street at the corner of Joseph St., the new location of  In From The Cold (IFTC)  emergency shelter joins the Housing Help Centre and Home Base Housing’s Administrative and Program offices. The  In From The Cold (IFTC) emergency shelter can house up to 29 people that makes it the largest shelter in the City of Kingston. Those in need can secure a bed through the Housing Help Centre at located 540 Montreal Street during the day or when the shelter opens in the evening. There is a meal provided upon arriving as well as a breakfast is available prior to departing for the day.

In From The Cold emergency shelter operates from 5pm to 8:30 am seven days a week.  The shelter doubles as a drop-in centre from 2-5 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 4-5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

The IFTC continues to benefit from generous financial and in-kind support from government agencies, the United Way, concerned citizens, community organizations, local businesses and religious groups.
